Chapter 13

Giordano put another spoonful of stew on his plate and tried to avoid the mocking glance of Ruby.

He still couldn’t believe that she’d been about to kiss him. If only her brothers would have come a moment later.

Her mother smiled at him and Jimmy tapped him between his shoulder blades. “Here’s a man to my liking. Eat, my son, because you’ll never taste a lamb as tender as what Linda can make.”

It was probably true. Even though Giordano grew up eating delicious food in his parents’ restaurant, he had to admit that Linda’s lamb was exquisite. But despite the tantalizing fragrances spreading in his mouth, his thoughts were only swirling around Ruby’s sweet lips.

“Mom, you might convert Giordano into a meat-eater after all.” Ruby winked at Giordano and a warmth spread in his chest.

He feared that she’d be upset with him about his lie. He knew how many times her trust had been betrayed by men. Even though his revelation was about a minor detail, he’d still expected her to take it worse.

Was this a sign that she could forgive him if he ever told her the full truth?

No, no. He shouldn’t go there. Him spilling the beans to her could never happen. If he did, he could say good-bye to his job at Uncle Giovanni’s firm. And not only that, but Mr. Donaldson wasn’t a person who would take a breach in the confidentiality agreement lightly.

He forced a smile to his lips and nodded to Ruby.

He couldn’t bring himself to say anything or even to swallow. His throat felt swollen by the guilt he was harboring. He grabbed his glass and took two long sips from his water to help the food go down. It did manage to slide the bite down but not the feeling of being an imposter.

He watched Ruby chat graciously with her stepfather and joke with her siblings. The hole in his soul threatened to deepen even further.

He’d let his yearning for Ruby’s company dominate his reason. He knew it was wrong and that it could potentially hurt him. But that didn’t matter. He was ready to take the pain of never seeing Ruby again, if he could only spend two real days with her.

Except he didn’t take into account her feelings.

And she obviously had some for him, otherwise she wouldn’t have acted the way she did in the shed, right? The last thing he wanted was for her to end up being hurt.

Was he egotistical for wanting to stay close to her? Despite his lies and no chance of any future?

“Is everything okay with you, my dear?” Linda’s kind voice snapped him out of his suffocating self-accusation. “Do you want some more before I serve dessert?”

Giordano put his hand on his belly. “Oh, I can’t possibly, thank you. I’ve eaten more than all of you together, I think.”

“That’s the way it should be. You’re a much better man than any of the others my daughter introduced to us, Giordano.” Linda’s eyes glistened with approval.
